A general overview of Emotional Intelligence can be obtained from Daniel Goleman's book Emotional Intelligence. Goleman's book covers emotional intelligence, but also discusses many other emotional, social, and personality factors which he believes falls under the general heading of emotional intelligence, and more generally speaking, character.
